Best Practices to Protect Your Business from the Inside Out

laptop with code sitting securelyWhen it comes to your business security, you may hit some unexpected snags or bumps along the way. To prevent these from becoming a huge problem, there are some steps that you can take to protect your business and put safeguards in place to stop problems. Business insurance will mitigate a lot of problems, but avoiding claims altogether is always the best option. Cyber Insurance is just one solution that will help protect any digital assets that you may hold for your clients or partners.

Technology Security

Just as burglars used to break into businesses, hackers now try to access your online databases for information. Sometimes they are looking to steal something, and sometimes they just want to plant a virus. Whatever they want, you don’t want them to get it. If you cannot afford to hire a technology security person on staff, be sure to incorporate firewalls, use anti-virus software and applications, block potentially dangerous websites from being accessed by employees, immediately change passwords for all employees who leave the business for any reason and install high-level spam filters on email.

Know Your Employees

Establish a strong and trustworthy team. It can be difficult to have complete trust in potential employees from a resume and a quick interview, so you may want to take additional steps. There are legal protections for employees to prevent discrimination, so be careful with what information you dig up. You should look into their employment and educational history and check references. If your employees operate machinery or perform manual labor, you should also have them take a drug test. This will ensure the safety of your other employees and lower the risk of serious accidents.

Monitor Your Facilities

Invest in security at your facilities. Whether you use a distribution center for online shipments or you have a physical retail location, providing security for your products, employees, and information is essential for growth. It is possible to find some low-cost and highly effective security cameras to monitor from anywhere at any time. If you have exceptionally expensive retail items, it might be a good idea to invest in a security guard. Many retired military veterans are highly trained and looking for work.

Protect Your Clients

Your clients must trust in you and your business before they become long-term, loyal consumers. It is essential that you protect their information as much as it is to protect yours. Be sure to establish secure payment practices by using reputable electronic payment methods over a secure connection. Keep email distribution lists and contact information secure by only providing access to a limited number of employees and save them in a secure place such as a protected server or the cloud rather than on hard drives in case of theft.

Take the time and spend a bit of money now to protect your business in the long term. You do not have to spend thousands on fancy tools and applications. However, you do have to take proactive measures to ensure the overall safety and protection of your business.
