Is the Security at Your Auto Dealership Good Enough?

Auto dealerships are a unique business to run due to their expensive inventory. Cars must be protected during the day, but the danger of burglary can increase at night. Here are three steps that should be taken to protect the dealership.

Hire A Security Company

According to Pro-Vigil Security Systems, “Auto dealerships are an attractive target for criminals. After all, the merchandise is generally kept outside, is valued at thousands of dollars, and can even double as a getaway vehicle.” Security companies can work with dealerships to create customized security plans. They might be expensive, but it is better to prevent crime than to suffer a large inventory loss. Security companies can install customized lighting, hire security personnel and work with a dealership in installing security software. Sometimes things are better handled when left to professionals. An auto dealership can easily have over a million dollars in inventory at any given moment; suffering a loss would be catastrophic to the business. Although one can handle security matters on one's own, a professional company can almost definitely do it better.

Conduct Background Checks On Potential Employees

Employees are the number one line of defense against a burglary. They open the dealership, handle closing tasks and operate as the heart of the business. Serious background inquiries should be conducted during the interview phase to ensure that they are reliable and trustworthy. The problem might not be that they harbor malice and have a plan to undercut the business. Negligence can be detrimental to an auto dealership. Make sure that past employers were satisfied with the interviewee's performance and that sloth is not one of their natural attributes.

Analyze Your Business From The Perspective Of A Burglar

Try to see what a potential burglar would see if he or she was looking at your business. Are there times in which no one is present to make sure the dealership is safe? Are all the doors of your auto inventory locked? Is there a certain place in the dealership where light doesn't reach? Infiltrators can operate under the shadow of darkness. According to Science Daily, “When selecting a target, most burglars said they considered the close proximity of other people -- including traffic, people in the house or business, and police officers; the lack of escape routes; and signs of increased security -- including alarm signs, alarms, dogs inside, and outdoor cameras or other surveillance equipment.” Take a trip out to your dealership during the night and analyze the potential downfalls of your perimeter. Keep a careful lookout for any dark areas or spots that are away from the public eye. Correct these weak points with extra lights, more visible security cameras and a potential security guard to watch over this area.

An auto dealership can contribute to the common good by providing people with vehicles. Since they can be targeted for a burglary, the above tips should keep a dealership as safe as can be. Security companies with prudence can go a long way in ensuring your auto dealership is the last on anyone's list to infiltrate. It might also be a good idea to make sure you have an insurance plan that will cover any theft from your dealership once you have done your part to eliminate possible threats.
