Preparing for a Winter Storm

bike in snowAlthough most Americans will never experience a crippling amount of snow, it is still wise to prepare for a winter storm. For homeowners in climates where snow storms are a possibility, it may be time to evaluate winter storm preparedness.

Ready For Winter?

It should be obvious that snow removal equipment needs to be handy when winter arrives. You should have snow brushes in an easily accessible location for clearing your car. A snow shovel, snow blower or plowing service may be required to keep driveways and sidewalks clear. It is important that guests do not slip and fall on your property because you did not adequately clear walkways. Rock salt or non-clumping cat litter may also be good to have on hand.

Consider creating a supply kit in case a significant snowstorm hits, causing you to be housebound for a few days. You will want a three-day supply of water and food. Flashlights with extra batteries are helpful if the power goes out. If you have pets or babies, consider their special needs when creating your supply kit.

Warm clothes including hats, mittens, and coats are necessary for winter survival. If the power goes out during a storm, you can wear these items in the house to help keep warm.

Storm In The Forecast?

If a storm is being forecasted, it is time to evaluate if you are ready. Verify that the car has over half a tank of gas in it. This will prevent the fuel line from freezing. If you have to drive in the bad weather, you will also want plenty of gas in case the drive is slow or a detour is required.

It is possible the power will go out. Charge your cell phone. Consider increasing the temperature of your house if you think a power outage is likely.

Leaving Town?

If you will be leaving town during the winter months, don't turn the heat off. Set it no lower than 55 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing. Let a neighbor or loved one know you will be away so they can check on the house if a storm does occur. Have someone lined up to clear your driveway while you are gone. This will make it easier for you when you return and will also deter any potential burglars from targeting your home.
