Essential Equipment You Need Before Paving a Road

Essential Equipment You Need Before Paving a Road

Just as with any construction process, paving a road requires specific equipment to be done well. Without the proper equipment, you run the risk of the asphalt cracking and causing potential damage to vehicles. If you’re paving a road, be sure to use the following equipment.

Asphalt Pavers

Asphalt pavers are incredibly useful machines that lay down and compact the asphalt to make the road as smooth as possible. These machines combine the uses of several more manual instruments into one self-propelling machine. Asphalt paver machines are divided into two sections: first, the tractor dispenses the hot asphalt onto the road and spreads it out to fill the surface area. Then, the screed section levels off the asphalt layer to the correct level and thickness, and compacts it down. The duality of the asphalt paver machine allows the road to be paved quickly and effectively, while preventing any future cracking.

Traffic Barriers

If you’re repaving the road, the area you’re working on is no longer safe for drivers. This means that, in order to keep everyone safe, you need to set up traffic barriers around the site to redirect traffic. Depending on the amount of work you need to do, you could need to close the road until the construction is complete. If you’re only working on one lane, you may have to redirect traffic and have workers do constant redirection. Just be sure you set things up with enough notice that incoming traffic knows which areas to avoid. Type III traffic barriers are the strongest that are commonly used. Making sure you have the proper signage and barriers helps civilians from becoming injured or causing damage to their vehicles.

Safety Gear

The site where you are paving a road has a lot of potential for danger and injury. With all of the machinery, tools, and construction happening, safety gear is an absolute necessity. Be sure any individual who enters the site is wearing the necessary protective equipment to avoid any injury. First, hard hats protect you from any falling debris or equipment. Safety goggles can also protect your eyes from any flying debris or gravel. Lastly, make sure to wear a safety vest so any incoming traffic can see you properly.

Keeping roads maintained allows individuals to safely travel to all of their necessary destinations. Paving the roads keeps people and vehicles in their best shape. In order to properly pave a road, be sure to have these necessary supplies.
