Industries That Need to Follow Strict Safety Standards

policy and procedures graphic

Safety standards help to keep employees, employers, and consumers or clients safe. These protocols are in nearly all industries. Some industries, however, need to follow very strict safety standards because of the hazards associated with working in their field.

Construction

People that work in construction are often dealing with unsecured, bulky, and heavy items. They also may be up quite high on unstable surfaces. Because this lack of secureness and stability is so common in their job, people working in construction need to follow strict safety standards.

There is a specific dress code when working in construction that includes long pants, hard hats, safety glasses, and other protective apparel. Wearing these items will help guard sensitive and vital parts of your body from physical harm that could be caused by scrapes, falls, or abrasions. Additionally, you need to be aware and follow all protocols when working in construction to avoid harm altogether.

Food Processing

There are very strict safety standards when it comes to food processing because food directly affects the health of the consumer. That’s why it’s important to have safety posters within the premise where the food is being prepared, to make sure that everyone is following the correct process in preparing the product. Unsafe foods could have immediate detrimental health effects or ones that don’t set in until years later.

Unsafe foods have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and other serious diseases. Federal regulations determine what ingredients and preservation techniques are safe to use. Foods that don’t meet federal regulations will either not be permitted to be sold or may be recalled in the future. Food safety relies on HACCP systems to remove hazards throughout the production process. Those working in the food processing industry need to make sure that their HACCP systems are working properly at all times. This will help ensure the safety of consumers.

Electrical Work

When working with electricity, one must be very careful to avoid electrical shocks. Major electrical shocks can lead to serious and long-lasting injury or death. Not following safety standards in electrical work can also cause dangerous electrical fires. One important safety standard in electrical work is to always use insulated tools.

The insulation on these tools absorbs electrical charge and protects the worker. Following safety standards may slow the work down in some industries, but it will help keep everyone involved much safer. Many of the effects of following safety standards aren’t even observable at the moment. However, the long-term effects of following safety standards are genuinely lifesaving and well worth it in the end.
